The Control Office is a function that sits within the markets business within the Markets & Securities Services area of HSBC. The Control Office helps manage and control non-financial and new risks in the business, including but not limited to operational, conduct and product lifecycle risk.
The Surveillance function within the Control Office is responsible for monitoring chat rooms and provide reasonable assurance that communications by MSS (GM & Treasury) staffs are consistent with HSBC’s communications and conduct policies. Also ensure that they are operating in line with relevant laws, regulations, codes and HSBC Group Standards/Values.
What you’ll do:
1) Impact on the Business/Function
- Monitoring chat rooms, GAS reconciliation, Outside of working hours, M and ensure exceptions, breaches and instances of irregularities are reported to line manager / London Control Office
- Escalate exceptions, breaches and instances of irregularities to line manager / London Control Office after careful analysis of alerts
- Identify trends (e.g. repeat offenders) and escalating appropriately
- Produce accurate MI for management
- Accurately logging surveillance activity, maintaining audit trail etc…
Typical Targets and Measures
- Responsibility for reviewing, processing, escalating and closing alerts in a timely manner
- Ensure as much as possible that escalations to London Control Office are genuine
- Production of accurate MI
2) Customers / Stakeholders
- Meet expectations of business partners and London Control Office
- Monitor and ensure adherence to agreed performance levels
- Participate in incremental work migration activities

What you will need to succeed in the role:
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE (in order of importance)
Including: Education, technical knowledge (number of years), company/industry experience, IT knowledge (levels required), languages etc.
- Bachelor or Master’s degree in Commerce, Management or Administration
- Minimum 5+ years of experience
- Experience in Surveillance is preferable
- Knowledge of Bloomberg Surveillance tools desirable
- Good knowledge on Financial Markets, Regulations, Products, Trading strategies and Terminologies
- Understanding of what constitutes misconduct in Financial Markets, including market abuse; ability to understand e-communications and analyse these for detection of potential inappropriate conduct
- Excellent proficiency in English, including slang, colloquialisms and idioms
- Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)
- Proficient in MS Office (incl. Excel & PowerPoint)
ESSENTIAL SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

- Operational Effectiveness & Control
- Assist and provide input into the ongoing development of the Markets Surveillance framework.
- Analysis of Management Information, including meeting packs from regional, business and GBM committees.
- Assist with ad hoc project work and special investigations to provide further analysis as requested by management. Support for the Business Control Committee governance structure.
- Support and analysis for Management Information initiatives.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience of working effectively and independently in a small team and also collaborate with global colleagues
- Implement best practice improvements
- Identify gaps in process documentation and address these effectively
- Maintain issues log and track progress in a timely manner
DESIRABLE SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

- Ability to work under pressure and within tight time-lines. Excellent time management and prioritisation of work tasks. Manage urgent ad-hoc requests from London Control Office / business
- Ability to support decisions with sound reasoning.
- Ability to clearly articulate implications of analysis and findings
- Ability to learn and grasp and new systems, tools and databases quickly
- Ability to make accurate judgment calls on the nature of alerts in a short time period (i.e. deciding quickly and reliably what requires escalation)
